PET/CT scan is taken for all types of cancer and is considered to be an accurate diagnosis for cancer. Before a PET-CT Scan

PET scan is performed by detecting radiation due to particles emitted from a radioactive substance. Fast for at least 6 hours before the scan. Avoid sugar and strenuous exercise 24 hours prior. If your blood sugar levels are high, the cells absorb this rather than the radioactive sugar and may not show the desired results. Inform staff about diabetes medication. Wear comfortable clothing. PET scan can be performed with your own clothing or the gown offered at the diagnostic centre.

Before an MRI Scan

You must inform the technician if you have an implant, pacemaker, artificial heart valve, drug pumps, body piercing, dental fillings, insulin pump, implanted nerve stimulator, metal joints, pins, screws, brain aneurysm clip or even tattoos. The magnetic resonance will interfere with these medical devices. You must always wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothes that do not have snaps or other metals. For some MRI scans like those around the pelvic region, fasting is required for at least five hours prior.

Before a CT Scan

A CT scan machine looks like a huge doughnut with a tipped side. The patient is made to lie on the platform and moved into the hole in the machine. Fasting for 4-6 hours is required if contrast dye is used. Inform staff about any allergies, kidney issues, or pregnancy. Wear loose clothing without metal. The scan itself takes 10-15 minutes.

Before a Mammogram

It is good to arrive early at the centre to complete the paperwork beforehand. Avoid using deodorant, perfume, or talcum powder on the day. Two views of each breast are screened; in case of larger breasts or breast implants, more images are taken. The entire procedure lasts for 20 minutes and the breast compression will be for a few seconds each time. Best scheduled 1-2 weeks after your period.

Before an Anomaly Scan

An anomaly scan must be performed for all pregnancies but very few doctors recommend this scan. The scan is performed only between eighteen to twenty-four weeks. We usually suggest that this can be done between 18 to 20 weeks — if there is something wrong with the fetus, it cannot be aborted after the 20th week. The scan has its limitations and cannot identify all problems.

Before an Ultrasound / GA Scan

For abdominal ultrasound, fast for 8-12 hours. For pelvic scan, drink 4-5 glasses of water 1 hour before. No special preparation needed for most other ultrasounds. The GA scan is a routine ultrasound to determine gestational age and monitor fetal growth — your doctor will advise on the optimal timing during pregnancy.
