If your physician finds symptoms of lung cancer in a patient, he/she may ask to perform several tests to find out the status and level of cancer. A PET CT test is performed to determine whether the cancer cells have spread out of lung.
Pet Test for Cancer In Anderson Diagnostics
A Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan is a special imaging test that helps to detect cancerous cells. It is usually found at major hospitals. During the PET scan lung forfunction test, the system would check whether the lungs are functioning well. It would also measure the amount of air lungs could hold and the length of time to fill air and emptied. A machine called spirometer will be used where you should deeply breathe in and breathe out.
Your physician may suggest a PET scan for several reasons. Some of the common reasons include:
- To confirm the analysis of lung cancer. It usually requires a biopsy to find the cancer types and molecular characteristics.
- To check whether an unidentified lung nodule remains to be non-cancerous or cancerous. In some cases, a scar tissue would be determined that is non-cancerous. PET scan helps to determine the variances between malignant and benign tumor without a lung biopsy.
- A PET scan is best when it comes to finding the level of spread. Thus, the cancer stage is diagnosed. It helps in distinguishing between limited and extensive lung cancer. It is also good for assessing lymph nodes that are cancer positive.
- Once the particular lung cancer is determined with the results, the physicians could plan treatment options.
- The level of success of the treatment depends upon the scan results.
- The PET scan helps to monitor the chances of the reappearance of lung cancer.

It takes three hours or even longer to complete the full body PET scan for cancer. Once the test is done, the oncologist will discuss the results and plans. We have estimated the total time that includes arrival, injecting glucose solution, waiting time and scanning procedure.
It is the most crucial test and mostly performed in the radiology department of the hospital system or cancer center.
What clothes to wear:
It is recommended wear clothes that you are comfortable with. Do not wear jewelry while performing the PET scan. You will be wearing the usual clothes at the time of taking glucose. When you are taken inside scan room, you will be changed to gown.
Drink, Food, Smoking, and Exercise:
As the PET scan depends on the cancer cells that pick radioactive sugar, the physician would ask you to change the diet. You need to avoid eating or drinking anything for about four to six hours prior to the procedure. But you can intake water during these hours. It is recommended to avoid sugary foods before one day of test. You will be asked to remain in rest or not exercise prior to one day before the test. Smoking has chances to decrease the test accuracy. It should be avoided one day before the test.
Certain diabetic medications like insulin has chances to change the test results. You have to consult with your doctor to see what medications you can take before the test.
During the PET scan test
After you reach the radiology department, the technician will meet and explain about the test. They will confirm whether you have any allergies. They would clearly review the procedure for better clarity. They would inject sugar in small amounts into the IV line. You need to wait for an hour to let the cancer cells absorb sugar. You can move but you should not be overactive. The radiologist would take you to the CT room and start the test. It may roughly take 60 minutes. You can leave once the test is performed.
After the PET scan test
As the radioactive sugar remains in the body, you need to be away from young children and pregnant women for about a day.
Interpreting PET scan results
The radiologist will share the results and status after successful completion of PET scan. You can learn about the status of the tumor before selecting the treatment options.
