An ABPM test requires wearing a small, portable BP monitor connected to a cuff placed on your upper arm. The device automatically records your blood pressure at regular intervals throughout the day and night — helping doctors assess fluctuations that may otherwise go unnoticed.
This test is considered the “gold standard” for diagnosing and evaluating blood pressure conditions because it reflects real-life BP variations. Traditional BP readings taken at a doctor’s visit may not always reflect your true blood pressure.
A 24-hour ABPM test helps:
- Detect white-coat hypertension (high BP only in clinical settings)
- Identify masked hypertension (normal clinic BP but high at home)
- Monitor day and night BP variations
- Evaluate the effectiveness of BP medications
- Track BP changes related to daily activities and sleep patterns
The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) also recommends ABPM testing to confirm a diagnosis of hypertension.
